IWC Big Pilot 5004-02

Terug in de vroege jaren 2000, IWC bracht een wit goud versie van haar horloge Big Pilot's: verwijzing 5004-02. Sceptisch IWC fans, die wilde weten waarom ze premium prijzen moeten betalen voor een luxe horloge die ook kan worden gekocht in roestvrij staal (en dat is in wezen een instrument horloge, aangezien het is bedoeld om te worden gedragen door piloten), aten hun woorden als zij zagen de 5004-02 in persoon. Omdat dit was niet zomaar een wit goud luxe horloge. Het was een IWC. En IWC niet standaard afwerking doen.
De IWC Big Pilot 5004-02 is een masterclass in materialen. Het witte goud behuizing (46,2 mm, serieus ter rechtvaardiging van de 'Big' in 'Big Pilot') is warm en zwaar, en wanneer genomen in combinatie met het witte goud uur markers (het horloge heeft zowel toegepast indexen en Arabische cijfers) geeft het geheel wat een duidelijk up-markt voelen. En de 'ardoise' dial moet worden gezien in persoon om het te geloven.
Ardoise is IWC naam voor 'slate'-al leisteen is niet een woord dat recht doet aan de kleur. Shimmering, vele lagen, maar toch matte en plat, het is de perfecte aanvulling op een horloge dat weinig in de weg van de versiering heeft. Op het eerste gezicht, de IWC Big Pilot 5004-02 is een grote grijze gezicht aangevuld met een gangreserve (3:00) en de datum venster (06:00). Maar als je het op je pols, en krijgen in het licht, het samenspel van kleuren en texturen op die ardoise wijzerplaat transformeert het in een ding van diepte en schoonheid. Voeg de heldere reflecties en diepe schaduwen die rimpel over de perfect afgewerkte kast, en je hebt een piloot horloge dat is ook een spectaculaire dagelijks stuk kreeg.
De krokodil riem, in het zwart, is doorboord dicht bij de nokken met twee metalen studs. Het is een mooi tintje, waarbij de militaire functie van het stuk herinnert, zonder afbreuk te doen aan zijn verfijnde uitstraling. Het verklaart ook waarom de fans van IWC Big Pilot horloges zijn vaak ook fans van Panerai . Dezelfde forse afmetingen en leer-en-metaal esthetische informeren PAM evenals Big piloten, en beide hebben een achtergrond in de echte militair instrument horloges. De IWC Big Pilot II, bijvoorbeeld, werd speciaal gemaakt voor de RAF , en duurde in actieve dienst voor meer dan 30 jaar.

Na de verrassing van ontvangst in première, ik anticiperen op een aantal van de belangrijkste kenmerken van de nieuwe Suunto ELEMENTUM AARDE .

Het horloge wordt geleverd met alle aluminium behuizing, negatief display met grijs - groene letters, saffier kristal (anti-reflectie) en, in het model naar mij, rubberen band; andere varianten zijn dan beschikbaar met stalen of lederen band, zowel zwart en bruin.
De klok, in TERRA versie, is gewijd aan outdoor sporten, bijvoorbeeld, gebruik ik het in mijn mountainbike routes, en is daarom de ideale metgezel voor liefhebbers van de vele sportieve activiteiten met betrekking tot de berg, of meer in het algemeen aan degenen die de praktijk sporten buiten.
Er zijn echter ook versies VENTUS de zeilwereld aangepakt en de AQUA versie voor wie praktijk duiken, elk met verschillende kenmerken en specificaties, die nuttig sportbeoefening waarin ze zijn beoordeeld zijn.
Het houden van de klok wij snel beseffen dat je vasthoudt iets speciaals en niet zomaar een product gemaakt in China, productie en realisatie is de Finse, en deze keer, zeker genezen. Zeer mooie zaak terug en kijken naar de grote kroon te drukken.
De zaak heeft nogal een maatje kleiner, ongeveer 40 mm (dus iets minder dan Suunto Core) en het gewicht van het horloge, in de rubberen band versie is ongeveer 100 gram.

What happened to Morgenwerk?

Perhaps the ultimate GPS watch, but which sadly to my knowledge yet to make a proper appearance. The German made Morgenwerk Precision Mk1 – GPS watch .

Understated full GPS function model with geographical co-ordinates, Compass, Altimeter etc. this is one VERY accurate watch.
No longer using what could well be described as old technology Radio Control, but instead feeding off a multitude of satellites, this model apparently will manage a staggering accuracy of under 1 second – per month!
Wherever you are in the world it will automatically display your Time Zone current time, day, date etc . A travelers dream.
It's under 14 mm depth, 44 mm diameter, Stainless Steel or Titanium cased, double anti-reflect coated Sapphire crystal, black dial with selectable discrete digital display.
Of real importance and a major breakthrough has to be the Battery life, which is specially enhanced with a reserve of up to 18 months, assisted by the use of a self correcting thermo-compensated quartz movement allowing variation adjustments and allowing amazing accuracy.

What I love is the fact that the watch is both understated and really easy to read and on wrist, seen to be just another “daily beater” albeit with great looks, but function wise does so much. It appears to me that if the brief functional detail is true, it will out perform just about anything else on the market.
However the burning question is – where is it?
The first intimation of it was way back in 2012 and the latest information I have is that their web site is currently in the build stage. One has to hope that once completed, the final watch details will be highlighted and models will be available for sale, especially as the price point quoted back in 2012 was from around $1100. And that could be a real winner.
I hate to say the phrase “ultimate watch” – but it could well be – IF it hasn't died a death along the way. And that would be a real shame . . . as it could be my final “grail”.
BUT – and here I float down to earth after being initially blown away with all this technology. Yes it's that old chestnut! Battery life! I mean let's face it 18 month? Come on . . . . I was hoping for 10 years MINIMUM – with all this super tech stuff – it should be 18 years!

Longines Heritage Diver 1967 Luxury Watch

This year, the Longines luxury watch brand has released the Heritage Diver 1967 model recreating the look of the iconic dive watch first introduced in 1967. The new timepiece features a unique aluminum diving bezel designed in the bordeaux color that contrasts beautifully with the black opaline dial and silver counters. An Interview With Melvin Hollenberg From WahaWatches

Back with a brand new article type for the blog, I will be interviewing a fellow blogger and vintage watch enthusiast Melvin Hollenberg. Melvin is the founder and owner of WahaWatches and is building a community that provides knowledgeable articles about owning, maintaining and collecting vintage watches.

How did you begin collecting watches, was there a defining moment?

I'm not sure if I really collect watches, to be honest. I do have a couple watches that I like (a lot) but I don't have a large collection. The technological aspect, the craftsmanship of the movements and how to keep those vintage watches running and preserved for future generations fascinates me much more.

It started when I inherited my late grandfather's watch. I remember listening to it as a child. I always found it a very reassuring, safe and familiar sound. The watch (a Moritz Ancre) was in a bad shape, though. A couple watchmakers told me that the watch wasn't really worth that much and I shouldn't spend that much money on it to restore it. In hindsight, that's ludicrous of course because how can you put a price on an heirloom. Anyway, I decided to do it more or less myself. Afterwards, it's even more special than when you had someone else do it. That's how this fascination began.

How is your collection currently made up?

After I inherited my grandfather's watch my parents bought me my first “serious” watch as a present, a 1943 Omega 30T2. I have a Longines 12.68Z dress watch, a Roamer dress watch and a Helvetia bumper automatic in stainless. I also have 3 chronographs, 2 Pontiac and 1 Lemania 105. For casual wear, I have a Tissot PR516 GL in stainless with the blue dial and a new Citizen Promaster Ecodrive watch.
